According to Australia’s Test captain, Pat Cummins, Steve Smith’s move to open the batting has remarkably rejuvenated the 34-year-old. Cummins noted Smith’s unprecedented cheerfulness and energy while preparing for his 106th Test against the West Indies in Adelaide.
Describing it as “a new challenge” for Smith, Pat Cummins emphasized the significance of this shift. He stated, “I’ve never seen him just as happy and as energetic as I have seen him around the nets the last couple of days.”

Smith’s unexpected transition to an opening position follows successful performances at first drop and No.4 in the batting order. The move wasn’t considered during retiring opener David Warner’s farewell Test series against Pakistan, but Smith advocated for the prospect.
In discussing the batting order, Cummins highlighted the importance of determining the configuration that enhances the team’s chances of success, especially considering individuals like Smith, who are consistent high scorers.
Cummins said, “Again, seeing him really keen for the challenge and seeing a way where he can think he can score more runs … give it a shot.”
Addressing the long-term perspective, Cummins clarified, “Our intention isn’t just to give you some Tests to see how it goes. We want to make sure it’s a shift that’s pretty much permanent.”
Like everyone else, Cummins beleives in Smith’s ability to thrive in any batting position but also, it brings a new challenge for him at the top order. “But top of the order, the ball is a little bit harder, it does ping off the bat a bit differently, potentially the field placements might be a little bit different.” Cummins said.
“He loves the problem solving aspect and trying something new so it’s all set up for him.”
With Cameron Green returning to the team at No.4, specialist openers Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris face disappointment in their Test aspirations.
Talking about these players’ future in Australian cricket team, Cummins said, “They’re doing all the right things just unfortunately they both just missed out.”
“I have got absolutely no issues with Bangers, love what he brings.”
Cummins assured both players that they are on the right track, emphasizing Bancroft’s absence of lingering concerns from the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.
