Sunrisers Hyderabad for a staggering ₹20.25 crore at the IPL 2024 auction, smashing the previous record. While his base price was just ₹2 crore, an intense bidding war erupted between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers, ultimately seeing him become the most expensive player in IPL history.
The Indian Premier League auction sizzled today, with Travis Head emerging as a hot commodity. After a thrilling bidding duel between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings, Hyderabad snagged the South Australian all-rounder for a cool INR 6.8 Crore (approximately $1.22 million). Head’s World Cup heroics, where he played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph, undoubtedly swayed the scales in his favor.
But Head wasn’t the only name to make headlines. The highest bid of the day belonged to explosive West Indies batsman Rovman Powell, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for a staggering $1.32 million. The move signals Royals’ intent to bolster their middle order with firepower.

However, not all star power found takers. The biggest surprise of the auction was the unsold status of Steve Smith, the Australian maestro. Despite his pedigree and experience, Smith failed to attract bids, leaving cricket pundits and fans scratching their heads.
Kiwi sensation Rachin Ravindra enjoyed a big day, getting picked up by Chennai Super Kings for 4.5 crores. South African firebrand pacer Gerald Coetzee found a home with Mumbai Indians for 5 crores. Notably, CSK seemed particularly interested in younger players this time around.
Wanindu Hasaranga went for a steal at 1.5 crores, with Harsha Bhogle even calling it a “robbery” considering his recent fitness struggles and injuries.
