PCB has named former Pakistan Captain & batting legend Inzaman-Ul-Haq as the Chief Selector of the National Men’s team. Notably, this will be Inzaman’s second stint in the role who has previously held the position in 2016 & 2019. It was only during Inzaman’s reign that Pakistan emerged as the No. 1 team in the Test format & went on to win Champions Trophy in 2017.
What will be Inzamam’s immediate Responsibility as Pakistan’s Chief Selector?
After stepping up into the role Inzaman will have the responsibility of overseeing the bilateral series against Afghanistan to be played in Sri Lanka from August 22 followed by the Asia Cup 2022. Then along with other members of Pakistan’s selection committee, Inzaman will name the Pakistan squad for ODI World Cup 2023. Head Coach Grant Bradburn & Head of Cricket Operations Mickey Arthur will also be part of the selection committee despite the fact that their tenures haven’t been extended yet. PCB decided to appoint Inzaman-Ul-Haq as the Chief Selector of the Pakistan team when the board is trying to revamp their complete cricketing structure.
He was also appointed as a member of the Cricket Technical Committee along with Mohammad Hafeez. But now after the appointment of Inzaman as the Chief Selector of the Selection Committee, he will no longer be a part of their technical Committee. For the unversed Inzaman was also a part of the selection committee which named their squad for World Cup 2019. And now he will serve in the same role & name the squad for ODI World Cup 2023.
What did Inzamam-Ul-Haq say after being named Pakistan Chief Selector?
“I experienced a successful stint in the previous tenure
“We achieved notable victories, notably the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which stood out. However, my most significant accomplishment is that a substantial 70 to 80 percent of the cricketers who were selected back then constitute the foundational players of today’s squads. While that team was undergoing a transitional phase, the current team stands on a stable foundation, and I foresee a different set of challenges,
“Leading a selection committee is inherently demanding in Pakistan, and the upcoming period will be even more testing, given the impending ACC Men’s Asia Cup, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and the subsequent Australia tour. Nevertheless, I am confident in my ability to excel in this role, and I am committed to surpassing my previous performance. Despite the limited timeframe, we are dedicated to announcing the most optimal lineups.”
What did Zaka Ashraf say about Inzamam’s Selection?
PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf was delighted with the appointment of Inzamam-Ul-Haq as the head of the selection committee. He further said that it’s an honor of having legendary Inzamam back in Pakistan Selection committee as Chief Selector
Meanwhile, The final hierarchy & responsibilities of the selection committee will be finalized after a meeting with Babar Azam, the captain of the men’s national team. PCB also confirmed that Inzamam’s replacement in the Technical Committee will be announced soon.
