Novak Djokovic opens up about friendship with Virat Kohli

Novak Djokovic is gearing up for another historic run at the Australian Open, aiming to claim a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title on the same court where he triumphed last year. But before diving into the heat of competition, the Serbian superstar indulged in a bit of Aussie flair, both on and off the court.

Djokovic faced off in an exhibition match with his Australian Open 2023 final opponent, Stefanos Tsitsipas, reigniting the on-court rivalry amidst friendly cheers. In another display of sporting camaraderie, Djokovic hosted a group of Aussie celebrities, including cricket legend Steve Smith. The duo even exchanged swings, with Djokovic joining Smith and the late Shane Warne’s son, Jackson, for a playful game of cricket.

Beyond the court, Novak Djokovic revealed an unexpected connection with Indian cricket sensation Virat Kohli. “Virat Kohli and I have been texting a bit for a few years. We never got a chance to meet in person, but it was really an honour and a privilege to hear him speak nicely about me. I obviously admire all of his career and achievements.”

Recognizing Kohli’s achievements, Djokovic also confessed his newfound love for cricket, albeit with a touch of humor: “I started to play cricket, but I’m not very good at it. But I have a task to perfect my cricket skills before I come to India, and don’t embarrass myself, when I’m there.”

While Djokovic might not be a cricketing star, he undoubtedly shines on the tennis court. He kicks off his Australian Open title defense against a young qualifier on Sunday, the world number one looking dominant after overcoming a wrist concern.

His opening match on Rod Laver Arena against 18-year-old Croat Dino Prizmic, a Grand Slam main draw debutant, is expected to be a smooth start. However, potential fireworks await in the third round, with a possible clash against fellow veteran Andy Murray looming large.
