Call it clinical, professional or dominating performance, New Zealand have shown how to win matches tactfully from difficult situations. Against Afghanistan, New Zealand’s batting display might not have been flawless, but their middle-order rose to the occasion, ensuring a crucial victory over Afghanistan.
Glenn Phillips who scored a crucial 17 runs off 80 balls was adjourned the Player of the Match. Later on he praised the team’s resilience in the face of adversity and attributed the key of team’s success to a strong team-first mentality.
The Kiwis were put into bat and started steadily, reaching 109 for one in the 21st over. However, a sudden loss of three wickets in nine deliveries put them under immense pressure. It was at this critical juncture that Phillips (71) and skipper Tom Latham (68) joined forces.
Both formed a remarkable 144-run partnership that helped New Zealand post a match-winning total of 288-6. It took them 7 overs to hit the first boundary of their partnership but eventually when they felt settled, New Zealand scored 100 runs in the last 10 overs.
What made this partnership even more impressive was the quality of the Afghan spinners, who posed a significant threat. Phillips acknowledged their talent, saying, “The Afghanistan spinners are incredibly talented and strong, and with losing a couple of wickets in the middle there, the way me and Tommy went about it was really pleasing.”
New Zealand’s middle-order test was seen as a valuable experience by Phillips, who noted, “Our top order has done really well over the last couple of games, so to be tested in the middle is really good.”
Such kind of performance is always expected from New Zealand. Phillips’ innings was more than numbers. At 110/4, he came and soaked pressure, had a few misses with bat, frustrating period but remained calm and changed gears at perfect moment. He can surely hit a ton in as many balls but today he really played one of best knocks at World Cup 2023.
