NBA season 2023–24 is approaching its eighth week and the race for the Most Valuable Player award is also getting heated. Outstanding performances and game-changing efforts are defining the contenders for this award. There are many players in the rankings who are making an impact as the season continues. Let’s have a look at the top five players who are frontrunners in the MVP race after eight weeks in the 2023–24 season.
5. Luka Doncic
Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is having his best scoring season and is currently ranked fifth in the power ranking. He is averaging 35.1 points, 10.7 assists and 8.3 rebounds over the Mavericks last nine games. Doncic was out for one game because he went to attend the birth of his first child, but he will surely climb up the rankings again.
4. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Oklahoma City Thunder Point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored his season-high 43 points in the game against the Sacramento Kings and moved up the ranks. Thunder lost that game, but the 25-year-old made a statement. Alexander currently ranks fourth in the power rankings and his team, Oklahoma City, is in second position in the Western Conference standings.
3. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored his career-high 64 points this year. The Milwaukee Bucks are also having great success, as they are in second place in the NBA Eastern Conference. Antetokounmpo has already won two league MVPs and is still at his peak. “The Greek Freak” looks ready to challenge the top two ranked players in the Power rankings. He has already left behind Doncic and Alexander.
2. Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic has missed only one game in the league but still remains a force. Even with his minor setback of only logging 16 minutes against the Chicago Bulls, his mindset to bounce back with a triple-double in the next game keeps him in second place in the rankings. The Serbian player always steps up for the team and is a valuable asset for the Denver Nuggets.
1. Joel Embiid
The Philadelphia 76ers Center Joel Embiid is the reigning MVP and is looking to collect his second MVP award. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference and look in good form. James Harden’s exit from the team is not affecting the 76ers much because Embiid is doing a great job with Tyrese Maxey. Losing an important player this season and still being a title contender makes Joel’s consistency more impressive.
