West Indies Captain Kraigg Brathwaite Draws Inspiration from Criticism to Clinch Historic Victory
It always bites back so be careful what you say about others. That’s exactly what happened with former Australian cricketer Rodney Hogg who had plenty of negative words for West Indies cricket team and the Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite didn’t hold back when he got the opportunity to make a reply.
In a stunning turn of events, the West Indies cricket team secured a historic Test victory over Australia, their first on Australian soil since 1997. The triumph, marked by jubilant celebrations among players and staff, showcased resilience and determination following scathing criticism from former Australian cricketer Rodney Hogg.
The spark that ignited the West Indies’ resurgence came from unexpected quarters, as Hogg’s disparaging remarks labeled the visiting team as “weak” and “hopeless” following their defeat in the first Test. Hogg’s comments, aired on Channel 10, Let’s not beat around the bush – the West Indies were hopeless in first match.”
“We should have two divisions now. We can’t have these weak sides coming out here. Mitchell Starc with a brand new pink ball, he’s going to run straight through them (at the Gabba). So I wouldn’t think the game would go any further than three days. They’re pathetic.
“I look back at the West Indies of old and we’re down stretching on the ground and they’re running past in Speedos and I’m going ‘gee look at their muscles’. These days the West Indies, they’d be running past in overcoats.”
Speaking to Fox Cricket’s Isa Guha post-match, Brathwaite acknowledged the role of Hogg’s words as motivation for the team, emphasizing their desire to refute the notion of being labeled as “pathetic.” The captain’s cheeky retort, questioning the size of Hogg’s muscles, encapsulated the team’s newfound confidence and resolve.
“I must say we had two words that inspired us in this test match. Mr Rodney Hogg said we were ‘pathetic’ and ‘hopeless’, so that source was our inspiration,” Braithwaite after winning the memorable test match at the Gabba.
“We wanted to show the world we’re not pathetic. And I must ask him – are these muscles big enough for him?”
