The Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor is unquestionably the biggest name in the UFC. He is one of the reasons many people became MMA enthusiasts and the sport became popular. During his decade-long career in the UFC, McGregor was known for his many quirks. One of his most infamous customs is making retirement announcements. “The Notorious” has announced his retirement four times in the last six years.
The Irishman is the master of announcing retirement
Conor McGregor first announced his retirement in 2016, when a highly anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz was controversially pulled from the UFC 200 card. However, the Irish soon bounced back and returned to beat Diaz at UFC 202 the same year in August. McGregor announced his retirement for the second time, almost a year after losing his historic grudge match against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in 2018. His whiskey brand was going well at the time, so many thought that he was serious about taking off his gloves this time.
2021 was the last time McGregor fought in a bout
The Mystic Mac couldn’t stay away from fighting, so he returned in January 2020 to fight Donald Cerrone. Later that year, Conor announced his retirement for the third time, but he reversed his decision and returned to fight Dustin Poirier twice, once at UFC 257 in January 2021 and another time in July at UFC 264. McGregor’s last fight with Poirier didn’t go well for him, as he suffered a severe fracture in his leg during the bout and has been out of action ever since.
Because of the long hiatus, McGregor announced his retirement for the fourth time in 2022 on social media, but soon revealed that he was teasing his fans and would never quit the sport.
McGregor is expected to fight Chandler this year
The Irishman hasn’t fought a single bout since July 2021. However, after a brief period of physical rehabilitation and recovery, he is eager to make a comeback. Earlier this year, McGregor was cast as a coach opposite Michael Chandler in the Ultimate Fighter. After the conclusion of the season, the two were expected to battle each other in the octagon, but McGregor’s unwillingness to enter the USADA testing pool is proving to be a major obstacle.
