Ireland Shifts Focus to White-Ball Series After Historic Test Win
Ireland coach Heinrich Malan acknowledged his team’s celebrations following their historic first men’s Test win but emphasized their focus on the upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan.
The Irish secured a convincing three-day victory over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi last Friday, marking a landmark moment for their cricket program. Malan admitted to the players enjoying the occasion but stressed the importance of switching gears for the upcoming challenges.
“There were obviously a couple of celebrations after the win,” Malan said. “But we understand we’ve got a big one-day series here as well, followed by the T20 games leading into the World Cup. The boys are already back in training, preparing accordingly.”
Rain disrupted their training schedule on Tuesday, forcing the team to practice at the nearby ICC Academy instead of the Sharjah venue. However, Malan expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.

“Everyone is ready to go,” he said. “The rain today has delayed things, but you can’t control the weather.”
Malan praised the consistency of his one-day unit, highlighting the all-rounder roles of Curtis Campher and Mark Adair in the batting order.
“We’re quite comfortable with our makeup at the moment,” Malan said. “But that doesn’t mean it can’t change. That’s the challenge of adapting to different conditions.”
While the focus of the news conference naturally shifted towards the historic Test win, Malan acknowledged the significance of the achievement.
“The lads received many congratulatory messages from around the world, including past players and coaches,” he said. “They might not fully grasp the magnitude of the win right now, being away from their loved ones.
But it was a fantastic occasion, and it will likely be celebrated more elaborately upon returning home, with those who paved the way for us to play Test cricket.”
Ireland will play three ODIs against Afghanistan starting Thursday, followed by a three-match T20 series leading up to the T20 World Cup.
