Ireland Clinch Historic First Test Victory Against Afghanistan
Ireland finally broke through the barrier in Test cricket, claiming their first-ever victory in the longest format with a six-wicket win over Afghanistan in a low-scoring encounter on Friday.
Having earned Test status alongside Afghanistan in 2017, Ireland endured a run of seven consecutive defeats before overcoming the Asian side in a match that concluded within three days at Abu Dhabi.
“A lot of our guys haven’t had the opportunity to play Test cricket,” said Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie, who led from the front with a crucial unbeaten half-century in the chase.
“Hopefully, this win will inspire people back home to aspire to become Test cricketers. We knew it would be a tough battle of attrition.”

Balbirnie expressed his delight at finally achieving the milestone, stating, “There’s a lot of cricket in the world, but we’ve carved out our own results and created history. Getting this win off our backs feels incredibly special.”
Earlier, Ireland’s bowling attack, spearheaded by seamer Mark Adair’s five-wicket haul (5-39), restricted Afghanistan to a meager 155 runs in the first innings.
Paul Stirling then top-scored for Ireland with 52, helping them build a 108-run lead by posting 263 runs in their first innings. Andrew Balbirnie (38) and Loran Tucker (46) made handy contributions in the lower order after Ireland found itself five wickets down at 106.
Adair continued his impressive performance, picking up three more wickets to dismantle Afghanistan’s top order in the second innings. However, Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (55) played a fighting knock, guiding his team to 218 runs and setting Ireland a modest target of 111 runs for victory.
Tough Chase to Start With but Ireland Kept its Nerves
The chase began disastrously for Ireland, as they slumped to 13-3 after losing openers Peter Moor and Curtis Campher for ducks in the second over. But Balbirnie, showcasing exemplary leadership, anchored the innings with an unbeaten 58.
Lorcan Tucker provided crucial support with an unbeaten 27, and the duo stitched together a crucial 72-run partnership to steady the ship. Tucker eventually hit the winning runs, sealing a historic victory for Ireland.

It took Ireland only 8 Test matches to register first win in the format. South Africa, India and New Zealand took 12, 25 and 35 matches respectively.
“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Player of the Match Adair. “It’s obviously very satisfying to get a win, and I’m absolutely delighted. Test cricket is a demanding format, but we have a strong bowling group, and the experience gained from playing a lot of cricket over the past year definitelyhelped us today.”
