According to recent reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to introduce a new technology Smart Replay System and remove the existing Decision Review System (DRS).
A standard media outlet report stated that the board is looking to use the Smart Replay System for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Previously, this method was used by the English Cricket Board (ECB) but has not been taken forward.
What is a Smart Replay System?
With the help of the Smart Replay System, the umpires will be able to communicate directly with the hawk eye operators as both will be stationed in the same room. These operators will provide accurate images to the umpire, captured by eight high-speed cameras installed in the stadium.
With the use of the Smart Replay System, the role of the director, who used to communicate between the hawk-eyed operator and third umpire will be diminished. This is considered a welcome change by fans as this aims to reduce the gap and provide accurate results.
Alongside this, the Smart Replay System will allow the umpire to access more images to arrive at decisions, including the split screens. For example, if the player has caught the catch unconvincingly in the slip cordon, the availability of a split screen is tough for the same frame. However, in the current method, they will be able to capture split screens for the same frame.
Under the new system, the stumpings will show tri-vision to the TV umpire. The tri-vision will include two side-on angles as well as one front-on angle. The front-on vision will help to analyse the moment of bail removal whereas the side-on angle will help to understand if the player has made the ground. Also, in the current system, broadcasters rely on Stump Cam, which has a meagre frame rate. This ends up in not getting accurate results. However, the conversations are still ongoing between the referee and umpires.
As part of the briefing program, the Board for Cricket Control in India has also arranged a workshop for umpires. It is understood that close to 15 umpires attended the program to know the technology better.
