According to a PTI report, the BCCI is likely to select India’s squad for this year’ T20 WC 2024 based on the performances of the players in the first month of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). For all the Indian players, performing in this year’s IPL will be important for many reasons.
Indian team only have one T20 international series against Afghanistan before the T20 World Cup. But, before the marque tournament, IPL 2024 will take place and the selectors will be keenly looking at the players’ performances.
The Indian Premier League 2024 will take place from 22nd March to 26th May, while the T20 World Cup is slated to be played from 4th June to 30th June 2023 in the West Indies and the USA.
Besides, there is a three-match T20I series this month against Afghanistan. However, most of the Indian players won’t be available. The likes of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav will miss out due to injuries. At the same time, some of the players involved in the ongoing South Africa series are also unlikely to take part in the series.
“Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aren’t fit. The Afghanistan series won’t tell you anything. Everything will be decided based on the first month of the IPL,” a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying by the BCCI.
The report also mentioned that senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also likely to be considered for the World Cup, depending on their form in the Indian Premier League.
It is worth mentioning that the duo hasn’t played a single game for India since the semi-final defeat against England in the T20 World Cup 2016 played in Australia. The report in PTI highlighted that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are eager to play in the T20 World Cup and it is now up to the selectors on whether they want to go into the tournament with veteran players in their side or play a relatively younger side with a different captain.
Surkumar Yadav To Be Vice Captain Prospect for T20 WC 2024?
Surykumar Yadav led the team in India’s two T20I series against Australia and South Africa. Under his leadership, India beat Australia 4-1 but levelled the T20I series 1-1. Suryakumar showed outstanding form with the bat and will be one of the key players in the batting department in the T20 World Cup team.
It is understood that as many as 25 to 30 players have been shortlisted and the selectors will be monitoring their performances in this year’s IPL tournament.
