Inconsistent Performance from Sri Lanka Leads to Early Elimination from World Cup
The recently concluded World Cup in India brought disappointment for Sri Lanka as they faced their seventh defeat in nine matches, resulting in an early elimination from the tournament. Coach Chris Silverwood identified inconsistency as the primary factor behind their underwhelming performance.
“Inconsistency. I think it would be fair to use that word,” Silverwood expressed during a post-match interview. Despite moments of brilliance, Sri Lanka struggled to maintain a steady level of performance throughout the competition. Silverwood acknowledged that there were instances where they played good cricket but failed to capitalize on crucial opportunities.

Reflecting on missed chances, Silverwood stated, “There have been certain games during this campaign that if we’d have taken the opportunities that were put our way, this could have looked a lot different.” The coach emphasized the need for a thorough analysis of their gameplay to identify areas for improvement.
Sri Lanka’s erratic form has placed them at the ninth position, tied with England, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands, each having four points. The top seven teams secure a spot in the Champions Trophy in 2025, adding further significance to Sri Lanka’s struggles.
Coach Silverwood Outlines Plan to Identify Areas for Improvement and Move Forward

As they face the reality of not making the cut for the Champions Trophy, Silverwood outlined the plan moving forward. “Have a good debrief, dissect what’s happened and have a look at what we can learn from this and what we can take into the next phase,” he explained.
While Sri Lanka did well in ICC World Cup qualifiers, they delivered a quite opposite performance in World Cup. Particularly they missed an experienced and commanding batting order. Basic mistakes and poor shot choices caused their demise.
The review process will involve a careful examination of individual and team performances in India. Silverwood expressed the intention to understand what went wrong and formulate strategies to address those issues. “We have everybody on the path, we have everybody available, and we can put our best foot forward,” he reassured.
Despite the setbacks and difficult memories, there will be something to cheer for Sri Lanka. 23-year old Dilshan Madushanka had an amazing tournament as he remains highest wicket taker. There is some potential Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama who looked more adept at batting in these conditions.
