Eoin Morgan Dismisses Speculations of Replacing England’s Under-Pressure White-Ball Coach
England is having an embarassing title defence journey in Cricket World Cup 2023, their strings of defeat is closely scrutinized by likes of Eoin Morgan and other pundits. The recent struggles of England in the ODI World Cup have ignited rumors and speculations about the future of their coach, Matthew Mott.
Mott, who has witnessed his team go through tough defeats, now faces questions about his role. Among the names circulating as a potential replacement is Eoin Morgan, the former World Cup-winning captain
England’s white-ball cricket team made its name popular because of their playing style which was to dynamic and aggresive in their approach. In this World Cup, they have looked uncertain and hit a rough patch. They just failed to adopt their natural style of playing because they lacked self-confidence.
The team’s performance has been underwhelming, with five losses in six matches and a precarious position at the bottom of the tournament table. The latest setback came in the form of a 100-run defeat to host nation India, following heavy losses to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
Amid the team’s struggles, speculations have emerged regarding the potential replacement of head coach Matthew Mott. Eoin Morgan, the captain who led England to World Cup glory, is one name that has been in the spotlight.
Following the defeat to India, Morgan made comments suggesting that there might be more to the team’s struggles than simply being out of form. He made a comment about the dressing room being “unsettled.”
Morgan’s comments on this matter were, “It might be a cause to the performance the England team have produced throughout this World Cup and contributing factors to that which surround it.”
However, these comments were promptly refuted by Matthew Mott. A couple of days later, rumours started that Eoin Morgan should be the next coach of England cricket team prior to the World Cup.
In response to these speculations, Morgan, who is currently working as a pundit for Sky Sports, downplayed the rumors, labeling them as “far-fetched.”
“I am very happy and cemented, hopefully, in what I am going to do in the future. I spend a lot of time home now with my young family which is great and I love watching on,” Morgan said.
Inbetween the tournament, these types of rumours surely put an extra pressure on the team and particularly on the coach who is having a hard time putting his team together in World Cup.
Morgan is right in saying that this is not the right time to talk about someone’s job being in danger. Reflecting on this particular natter, Morgan said, “They are double world champions for a reason, they are not a bad team by any stretch.”
“Matthew Mott is going through the biggest challenge of his England coaching career at the moment and it is one that he should be given time to put right.”
England faces another challenge of being knocked out from the qualifications of Champions Trophy 2025 which will take place in Pakistan. With so much on stake for England, both Matthew Mott and Jos Buttler will be feeling the pressure alongside responsibility to get the job done.
England are yet to play Netherlands, Pakistan and Australia. If they win all three, they will definitely be reaching the Champions Trophy 2023.
