Australian star opener David Warner has confirmed that he will be retiring from the T20I format after the 2024 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held this year in the USA and the West Indies.
Warner announced the recent T20I against West Indies. It was also his 100th T20I appearance for Australia and with that, he also became only the third cricketer to have played 100 international matches in all three formats of the game.
In his 100th T20I, David Warner played a stellar knock of 70 runs in 36 balls, which set the tone for a massive 213-run total posted by Australia in the first innings. Australia won the game by 11 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series.
“Pleasing to get the win on the board. It was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of those. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so it’s important we win there as well,”
Warner, who was named the Player of the Match, said at the post-game presentation ceremony.
Warner’s knock was laced with 12 fours and 1 six, playing at a strike rate of 194.44. In 100 T20Is played for Australia, David Warner has managed to score 8786 runs at an average of 44.6.
For the unversed, David Warner has already announced his retirement from ODI and Test cricket. He took retirement from the ODI format after playing the final of the 2023 World Cup against India. Australia lifted the World Cup trophy after beating India by 6 wickets in the summit clash.
