Currently, Indian players who are selected for the marquee event are participating in the preparatory camp organized at NCA ahead of the Asia Cup 2023.
Most of the players have already joined the camp while the Indian team playing in Ireland will join the clan by 25th August. Kohli & his teammates who are present in the Camp underwent the Yo-Yo Test on Wednesday. And without any surprise, our fitness freak Kohli has passed the Test with flying colors.
Kohli has also shared an Instagram story sharing the news of clearing the ‘Yo-Yo’ Test with overwhelming scores of 17.2.
What is ‘Yo-Yo’ Test?
Now you all might be wondering what is actually a ‘Yo-Yo test’’? So ending your curiosity here I will give you insights into a Yo-Yo Test & its significance for cricketers.
The ‘Yo-Yo Test’ is a Test of both physical fitness as well as mental strength of players. Two cones are placed at 20 meters distance from each other. Cricketers are expected to run from one cone to another & then return to the starting point within an estimated period. There is a single beep that indicates whether the player completed each round within the set time. If a player fails to recah the point before the beep, he is given a warning. After completing each run there is a small 10-second break before the beginning of another round. With each round, the stipulated time to reach the cone decreases.
As soon as the players exhaust their limit of three warnings the speed limit achieved till that point is calculated. Virat Kohli hit the 17.2-minute mark to cross the minimum speed level set by the Indian team management for the ‘Yo-Yo’ Test. The 18 players who are in contention to be in the Cricket World Cup 2023 squad will undergo extensive fitness and medical tests at the ongoing preparatory camp as the BCCI doesn’t want to take any chance with the World Cup Trophy at stake.
Most of these Tests are a part of the Players’ routine fitness Tests & are conducted from time to time by the NCA or BCCI. These Tests are of great value for the team with two marquee events Asia Cup & World Cup 2023 in the picture.
“The Routine Fitness Test of Indian Players who are a part of the Ireland T20I series will be conducted along with their mandatory Blood Tests,
a source near BCCI confirmed.
What other tests form a part of the Routine Fitness Test?
Other tests that players will undergo along with fitness Tests are lipid profile, blood sugar (fasting and PP), uric acid, calcium, Vitamin B12 and D, creatinine, and testosterone. There are chances of conducting Dexa Tests aslo which is a type of bone density Test.
Speaking about the routine fitness tests a source near NCA said,
“There is nothing new in what all are being done in between the series when players go through a break. They have individual diet charts as per their body type requirement and also customized training module.”
India will begin their Asia Cup 2023 Campaign against Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
