Michael Bracewell Named Surprise Captain as New Zealand Announces T20 Squad for Pakistan Tour

New Zealand sprung a surprise on Wednesday by naming experienced all-rounder Michael Bracewell as captain for their upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan.

Bracewell, who hasn’t played an international match since March 2023 due to injuries, will lead a youthful New Zealand side with several frontline players unavailable for the tour due to the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Regulars Kane Williamson, Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra are all absent.

The 33-year-old Bracewell’s return to fitness and his leadership experience at the domestic level convinced selectors to hand him the captaincy reins.

“Michael has faced a long period on the sidelines and it’s exciting to see him back playing cricket again,” said New Zealand selector Sam Wells. “He’s a well-respected leader and has captaincy experience for Wellington along with New Zealand A and New Zealand XI teams, which we believe holds him in good stead to lead the group in Pakistan.”

The squad also includes two potential debutants – fast bowler Will O’Rourke, who impressed on his Test debut against Australia recently, and hard-hitting batter Tim Robinson, who has been in good form in domestic cricket.

“This tour will be an excellent chance for (O’Rourke) to test his skills in foreign conditions,” Wells said. “Tim (Robinson) is still very early in his domestic career but his natural ability and explosive power was on full display this season.”

The five-match T20I series against Pakistan kicks off on April 18 and will serve as preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.
