10 Best Players In The History of Brooklyn Nets

10 Best Players In The History of Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets have become a competitive team over the past few seasons of the NBA as they have featured big names like James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on their roster. The Nets are one of those franchises that have yet to win an NBA title. The franchise has never had a deep roster consisting of the greatest players. However, there have been many big names who contributed well to the franchise and are still in the hearts of Nets fans. In this article, we will have a look at the 10 best players in the history of the Brooklyn Nets franchise.

10) Drazen Petrovic

Drazen Petrovic started playing for the Brooklyn Nets in 1990. The unfortunate thing was that he passed away just when he was starting to become a star. He was an incredible three-point shooter at a time when he was still becoming a big part of the sport. When Petrovic made the All-NBA third team in 1993, New Jersey fans felt they now had a face for the franchise. In a heartbreaking accident, Drazen lost his life a few weeks later.

9) Derrick Coleman

Derrick Coleman was the first overall pick of the 1990 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1991. After this, Coleman didn’t exactly have a career as a star player, but he is still one of the greatest players in franchise’s history. Coleman averaged 19.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game during his five seasons with the Nets. Derrick’s best season with the franchise was in his Rookie year, when he got two All-NBA selections and an All-Star appearance.

8) Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving began his professional basketball career with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011. He spent six seasons with the franchise and also won the NBA ring in 2016. “Ankletaker” then joined the Boston Celtics and after playing two seasons, he finally became part of the Brooklyn franchise. Irving set a franchise record by scoring 60 points for the Nets in an impressive regular-season performance. He has actually been quite amazing on the court, scoring massive numbers.

7) Buck Williams

Williams was the third overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He is an underrated player who contributed incredibly to the franchise during the 1980s. Buck made three All-Star appearances that showed he was the core talent the Nets relied on and an important part of the franchise. He held the Nets record for most points in franchise history for decades, until Brook Lopez surpassed him. Buck’s jersey was retired by the Nets and he is celebrated by the fans for his impact on the franchise.

6) Richard Jefferson

Richard Jefferson was traded to the New Jersey Nets on draft night and he ultimately became a big part of the franchise. “RJ” succeeded as the team’s third scoring option to such an extent that Brooklyn traded Keith Van Horn to give him more playing time. Jefferson’s athleticism and boldness on the court made him the top scorer for the Nets for a few seasons. He played seven seasons for the franchise but was not traded when New Jersey entered a rebuilding phase. However, he is still part of Brooklyn as a broadcaster.

5) Brook Lopez

Brook Lopez was the 10th overall draft pick by the New Jersey Nets in 2008. No one thought Lopez would go on to be the franchise’s leading scorer, but his highly underrated run with the Nets made up for it. “Splash Mountain” is the only standout player to be with the Nets at the end of the New Jersey years and the beginning of the Brooklyn years. He was not a superstar player, but he made his only All-Star appearance for the Nets. He had several 20+ point per game seasons for the franchise, which helped Brook make an impact on an inconsistent franchise.

4) Julius Erving

Julius Erving was part of the Nets franchise from the ABA merger until the beginning of the NBA. Due to his explosive dunks and generally effective offensive play, Irving became arguably a must-watch player. The Nets retired Erving’s jersey and celebrate him whenever he makes rare appearances in a live game. “Dr.J” made it big in the league with the Philadelphia 76ers, but the fans remember him for his Nets tenure.

3) Vince Carter

The New Jersey Nets made a huge trade to acquire Vince Carter after he wanted to leave the Toronto Raptors franchise. “Vinsanity” played five seasons for the Nets franchise and remained one of the better scorers in the league. He made four of his eight All-Star appearances for the Nets. The high number of game-winning shots and highlight plays made Carter the most popular in the franchise during most of his tenure there. He remains the third all-time in career points for the franchise.

2) Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant was already a star player and a two-time NBA champion when he joined the Brooklyn franchise in 2020. He was part of the Nets franchise for only three seasons but he is already one of the top three players of all-time in the franchise history. An injury-plagued Nets team saw one of KD’s true scoring games in the 2021 NBA Playoffs before falling short to the Milwaukee Bucks. Durant was fantastic on the court for Brooklyn averaging more than 29 points per game.

A surprising turnaround saw the Nets become the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and make the NBA Finals in just one year.
