Southampton vs Huddersfield Town: Preview
Southampton form analysis.
The Saints have made an excellent start to 2024 as they sustain a top table position. After ending 2023 with a late 2-1 home win over Plymouth, Southampton carried that momentum into the new year. They fought back to draw 1-1 away to Norwich before an outstanding 4-0 home thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday thanks to goals from Adams, Armstrong, Fraser and Mara. Southampton continued their fine form by winning 3-1 away at Swansea in their next game as strikes from Adams, Smallbone and Downes saw off the hosts.
Most recently, Southampton ground out another victory, beating Rotherham 2-0 away from home after Bednarek and Armstrong both scored again to make it three wins from four unbeaten games in 2024. Overall, Southampton have bounced back strongly after a poor first half of the campaign. With attacking threats like Adams and Armstrong looking dangerous, coupled with tight defensive displays, momentum is growing at the perfect time for manager Russell Martin’s promotion push.
Huddersfield Town form analysis
After ending 2023 with an excellent 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough, Huddersfield made a slow start to the new year as they were beaten 1-4 at home by Leicester, despite Helik pulling a goal back. They stopped the rot by fighting back to draw 1-1 with Plymouth thanks to Koroma’s equalizer cancelling out Whittaker’s opener. Huddersfield then ground out another gritty point as they drew 1-1 away to Blackburn, with Helik again on target to salvage the draw after Wharton’s early goal.
Their resurgence continued as they dramatically equalized late through Paal to draw 1-1 away at QPR after going behind to Rudoni’s strike. Most recently, Huddersfield returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday, with goals from Pearson, a Koroma brace and Thomas capping an excellent attacking display. Overall, it’s been a decent start to 2024 for the Terriers. They bounced back well from the heavy Leicester loss to remain firmly in the promotion hunt.
