South Africa Survives Late Scare to Edge Out USA in T20 World Cup Thriller
In a thrilling contest at the T20 World Cup in Antigua, South Africa narrowly defeated the USA by 18 runs in the first game of the Super 8s. Despite a precarious situation, the Proteas managed to secure the victory thanks to some clutch bowling and a standout batting performance.
South Africa posted an impressive total of 194-4, their highest score of the tournament so far. Quinton de Kock was the star with the bat, scoring a sublime 74 off 40 balls, featuring seven fours and five sixes. Captain Aiden Markram contributed a lively 46 from 32 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen added a quickfire 36 off 22 deliveries. This commanding total was set on a more batter-friendly pitch in Antigua, a stark contrast to the tricky surfaces in New York where South Africa played their group stage matches.
Despite losing Reeza Hendricks early, South Africa made a strong start, reaching 64-1 at the end of the powerplay, including a brutal 28-run over from Jessy Singh.
However, the USA bowlers showed resilience, with Harmeet Singh removing De Kock and David Miller in successive deliveries to slow the momentum. Saurabh Netravalkar also impressed with figures of 2-21, containing the powerful South African lineup.
USA made big things look possible for a while as South Africa were put under pressure
Chasing a daunting target of 195, the USA began aggressively but lost wickets at regular intervals, falling to 76-5. Andries Gous and Harmeet Singh then put together a brilliant 91-run partnership, giving the USA hope of a remarkable comeback.
Gous, who remains the tournament’s top run-scorer with 182 runs, played a sensational knock, remaining unbeaten on 80. His innings included five fours and five sixes, bringing the USA back into contention.
With 28 runs needed from the final 12 balls, Kagiso Rabada delivered a crucial 19th over, conceding just two runs and taking the wicket of Harmeet. Anrich Nortje then bowled the final over, allowing just seven runs, ensuring South Africa held on for a narrow victory. Rabada was the pick of the Proteas’ bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-18, showcasing his class in the death overs.
The USA’s spirited chase highlighted their progress in the tournament, having already chased down 195 in their opener against Canada. Despite the loss, their fighting spirit and exceptional individual performances promise an exciting future for American cricket.
South Africa’s next match is against England in Saint Lucia on Friday at 8:00 IST, while the USA will face fellow co-hosts West Indies at 6:00 AM on Saturday.
