T20 cricket has never been the stronger side of South Africa, but when they get going in any format, it’s not about a particular 20 format; they are a very difficult team to beat. This is due to their resilient and gritty nature; they just never give up.
The record for the highest ever T20 chase belongs to South Africa, chasing down 259 runs posted by West Indies earlier this year. There is no doubt about the potential to become a great T20 team; however, inconsistency has plagued their progress. The weak side of their team has been their bowling in T20, which isn’t very suitable for this format.
For the T20I series against India, South Africa has made plenty of changes in the bowling attack, crucial for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Lizaad Williams is a promising young prospect; we saw him playing at the Cricket World Cup 2023 and in the T20I series against Australia, where he was the only successful bowler for South Africa.
Ottniel Baartman is another talented bowler set to make his debut against India. With 68 wickets in 51 matches at an average of 17.39 in T20Is, his records are quite impressive.
Gerald Coetzee, an exciting talent in South African cricket, is still early in his career. Passionate and enthusiastic, he relies on pace and accuracy as his strengths.
Expect a lot of variation in this bowling lineup, with plenty of potential. While they lack a more skillful bowler, South Africa has the arsenal and power to compete. The challenge lies in the death overs, a weakness for South Africa.

They perform well in the first 6 overs and the middle overs, but the question remains about the death overs and the lack of senior experience. Kagiso Rabada has not been at his best recently in the shortest format. Lungi Ngidi, though exciting, has struggled with leaking runs. South Africa needs to address these issues in their bowling lineup.
South Africa’s bowling attack won’t solely rely on Keshav Maharaj for leadership. They have several all-rounders who can bowl effectively, making Maharaj’s presence invaluable for sharing experience and tactical insights. His intelligence in reading the game is an asset.
It will be interesting to see whether Marco Jansen or Andile Phehlukwayo gets the nod. Jansen has been a reliable lower-order batsman but struggled with the ball lately. South Africa might favor a new opening bowling combination.
