Shubman Gill Appointed Vice Captain of India’s T20 Team for Sri Lanka Series
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice captain of India’s T20 team for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka, starting next week. This announcement follows Gill’s successful stint as the captain of the T20 side in a four-match series against Zimbabwe, where India emerged victorious.
Despite his recent achievements, Gill’s career has seen its share of ups and downs. One notable disappointment was his exclusion from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, hosted by the United States and the West Indies. Many expected Gill to secure a spot in the team, but he was not selected.
Reflecting on this, Gill commented,
“If we talk about World Cup selection, according to me, my performance in T20 Internationals before that was not that good. I could not do as well as I had expected. However, now before the next T20 World Cup, we have to play 30-40 matches and my focus will be on performing as much as possible as a batsman.”
India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign featured seasoned players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opening the innings, followed by Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were not included, partly due to their inconsistent performances in the IPL despite both scoring centuries.
Speculation suggests that the BCCI is grooming Gill as a three-format player, with plans for a gradual transition into a more prominent role. This strategic decision aims to prepare Gill for leadership and ensure a smooth succession within the team.

Gill’s absence from the T20 World Cup squad was not due to poor performance but rather the presence of experienced players in good form. As India transitions into a new era of cricket, with veterans making way for emerging talent, Gill’s appointment as vice captain against Sri Lanka from August 7 marks a significant step in his career.
There is also speculation that Gill might soon be considered for the vice captaincy of the Indian Test team. This would further solidify his place as a key player in the national setup, providing him with more opportunities to prove his mettle.
As India embarks on this new chapter, all eyes will be on Gill to see how he handles this leadership role and cements his position in the team.
