There comes a huge blow for KKR ahead of the IPL 2024 as their Captain Shreyas Iyer will miss the initial fixtures due to a back injury. For the unversed, this is the same back injury due to which Iyer missed IPL 2023. recently Iyer played a knock of 95 runs in the Ranji Trophy final & after that knock his injury resurfaced.
Iyer had underwent a back surgery in 2023 before returning for the ODI World Cup 2023. He has just played four months of International Cricket before complaining of back pain. There was confusion over Iyer’s absence in the last three matches of the Test series. Initially, India coach Rahul Dravid had said that Iyer had missed out on the selection while the batter has reportedly told BCCI he had back issues and that was the reason why he did not even play a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai.
However, the medical team of NCA informed BCCI that Iyer didn’t have any injury. As a result, BCCI dropped him from the central contracts post which Iyer was seen playing in the final of the Ranji Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer’s injury is looking serious says a BCCI Source
A BCCI source has been quoted as saying to the Times of India that Shreyas Iyer’s injury is looking serious & will be missing the initial few matches of IPL 2024.
“It is not looking good. It is the same back injury that has been aggravated. It is unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” said the BCCI source.
During Shreyas Iyer’s 95-run knock for Mumbai, Iyer took medical assistance as he was clearly in pain. As a result, he couldn’t take the field for Mumbai on Day 4 & Day 5. However, Mumbai managed to end their eight-year title drought by winning the Ranji Trophy final.
KKR is all set to play their first fixture of the IPL 2024 on March 23 and if Iyer does not reach full fitness in the next 8 days, he is likely to miss the team’s opening game. If that’s the case then it will be worth seeing what will be KKR’s take on this. Whether they will announce Shreyas Iyer’s replacement for a few games or not.
But the major question that is now arising is that if Iyer was not fit then how did NCA give him clearance to play in the Ranji Trophy final?
