Devin Haney has regained his undefeated record in boxing after Ryan Garcia tested positive for a banned substance. The match result was changed to no contest, which was originally a majority decision win for Garcia. However, Haney is still not satisfied with Garcia’s situation.
Haney vs Garcia fight is now turned into a no-contest
When the two boxers stepped into the ring last April, Garcia got a thrilling win. However, the fight turned into controversy because of the circumstances before and after it. “King Ry” behaved erratically before the bout and displayed strange behavior on social media. Later, he weighed in 3.2 pounds over the limit for the bout, making him incapable of winning Haney’s super lightweight title. Garcia beat Haney on cards, but the fight was officially nullified as part of a penalty given to Garcia by the New York State Athletic Commission for failing post-fight drug tests twice. Garcia also received a one-year suspension from boxing.
Haney is still not satisfied with Garcia’s punishment
But it seems like if it were up to Haney, he wouldn’t allow Garcia to fight at all. During an interview with MMA Hour, “The Dream” said, “I don’t think there should be cheating in the sport of boxing. If you get caught cheating, I think you should be banned for life.”
He further pressed on the fact that boxers go in the ring and put their lives on the line each time, sometimes people see guys get killed in the ring during the fight.
Haney believes that Garcia might have felt threatened by him and suddenly started acting strange. The 25-year-old even said that Garcia was covering his back, so if he lost, he was going to play the crazy role.
Since the news of the drug tests broke, Garcia’s team has maintained that he is the victim of contaminated supplements. They wrote in a statement that samples of two supplements tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency came back positive for ostarine contamination and Garcia is innocent. Ryan responded to his suspension by following up on a previous retirement tweet and suggesting that he might move to the UFC.
Haney claimed that Garcia tried to reach out to him
Garcia’s actions seem to be not sitting well with Haney, who has no interest in ending this rivalry with Garcia. Haney claims that Garcia tried to reach him out, texting on Instagram and trying to be cool. But Haney is not a little bit interested in him and wants Ryan to pay the price for what he did in the ring.
With the bout between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney on April 20 now listed as no-contest, Haney’s undefeated record was restored with 31-0. He is himself on a hiatus currently, having recently tweeted that he may not fight again until 2026.
