Shoaib Bashir Takes Five Wickets in Epic Test with Marathon Overs
England’s rookie spinner Shoaib Bashir turned heads with a remarkable five-wicket haul in his second ever Test match, showcasing both his tireless work ethic and impressive bowling talent.
Bashir, 20, came into the fourth Test against India as a relatively unknown quantity, having only played six first-class matches with modest returns. However, he quickly made a name for himself with an extraordinary display of stamina and skill.
On day two, Bashir was thrown into the deep end, bowling a marathon 31 overs in a row before being briefly taken off with just three overs remaining in the day. He returned for one final over before stumps, finishing the day with a commendable 4-83.
“The way he bowls is a good indication of his character and personality,” said his teammate Joe Root. “He’s cheeky, he’s funny – a great lad to have around the dressing-room and I really enjoy his company.”

Bashir’s work ethic was further highlighted by the fact that the record for the longest spell in Test cricket belongs to former Indian bowler Narendra Hirwani, who bowled 59 overs against England in 1990.
Continuing his impressive run on day three, Bashir claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing Akash Deep, finishing the Indian innings with figures of 5-119 off 44 overs. India were bowled out for 307, with England responding with a score of 353 in their first innings.
Cricket legends were quick to praise Bashir’s achievement. “What an achievement, to do it in a Test match when his side needs him. Great effort,” said Indian legend Ravi Shastri.
Bashir’s journey to this point has been anything but ordinary. He faced visa issues entering India and missed the first Test. His selection, along with fellow unheralded spinner Tom Hartley (3-68 in India’s first innings), has been lauded as a bold and successful move by the England selectors.
“Imagine being 15 or 16 years old, a young spinner, and hearing Bashir’s story?,” Root said. “It just shows how close you can actually be, how you should keep dreaming and chasing it, keep giving yourself the best chance to work at your game. Because you never know where you could end up.”
West Indies legend Ian Bishop echoed these sentiments, stating, “Selectors deserve a lot of credit for such an innovative selection and method in picking Shoaib Bashir.”
With his remarkable debut performance, Shoaib Bashir has not only announced himself on the international stage but also served as an inspiration for aspiring young cricketers around the world. His story is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and a never-give-up attitude.
