Sheffield Wednesday vs Coventry: Preview
Sheffield Wednesday form analysis
The Owls’ recent Championship form has underwhelmed with just one win from their past five matches, stalling an earlier push up the table. Their run began with a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Cardiff City on December 23rd after Andreas Musaba had put them ahead. Things worsened on Boxing Day as Wednesday failed to register a shot on target in a limp 2-0 home defeat to Coventry City. Their attacking struggles continued on December 30th with a 1-0 loss away at Preston North End, undone by a Michael Johnson goal.
The New Year opened promisingly however as Wednesday thrashed struggling Hull City 3-1 at home on January 1st to finally regain momentum after festive misery. But following previous false dawns already this season, Wednesday sank to another heavy loss in their last match, thrashed 4-0 away to Southampton on January 13th. These wildly fluctuating results sum up Wednesday’s inconsistency hampering their quality. Finding greater consistency could rekindle their push for the play-offs.
Coventry form analysis
Coventry City’s recent Championship form has been fairly strong with three wins and two draws from their past five matches. This positive run started with a convincing 3-0 away victory at struggling Sunderland on December 23rd thanks to goals from Tsubasa Sakamoto, Callum O’Hare and Kyle Palmer. Another 2-0 home win followed over Sheffield Wednesday three days later with Sakamoto again on target before Coventry fought back from behind to draw 2-2 with Swansea on December 30th, showing their spirit.
That character shone again on New Year’s Day as two more Sakamoto goals helped Coventry win 3-1 away at Middlesbrough. Most recently, Coventry claimed an impressive 3-1 home victory over high-flying Leicester on January 13th, coming from 1-0 down to stun their visitors with O’Hare bagging a late brace after Marten van Ewijk’s equalizer. With talent like Sakamoto and O’Hare excelling, Coventry’s form makes them dark horses for a play-off push.
