Bangladesh’s skipper, Shakib-Al-Hasan is all set to miss Bangladesh’s final league stage fixture of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. There are also chances of Shakib missing the home series against New Zealand which will begin later in November. This is because Shakib broke his left index finger while batting in their fixture against Bangladesh on Money, November 6. Following the fixture, Shakib conducted an X-ray which confirmed a fracture that ruled him out of the remaining ODI World Cup 2023. His deputy Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the side against Australia on November 11.
“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint,” National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said on Tuesday. “Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab.”
Shakib-Al-Hasan’s poor run in ODI World Cup continues
The veteran batter of Bangladesh, Shakib who scored over 600 runs in the World Cup four years ago is having a dismal campaign in the ongoing CWC 2023. He has so far scored 186 runs from seven innings at an average of 26.57. In their fixture against Bangladesh, Shakib managed to score 82 runs & scalped two wickets which helped him to win the ‘Player of the Match Award’.
However, the SL vs BAN fixture was full of drama as Angelow Matthews faced timed-out dismissal due to Shakib-Al-Hasan’s appeal. Mathews who came to bat on the field went back to the hut to change his helmet & as per the umpires & Shakib, he exceeded the 2 minutes rule of ICC where the new batter coming on the field should take the strike within two minutes. Though Mathews raised their voice over the umpires’ decision & Shakib’s appeal, the umpires were firm on their decision & Mathews finally had to go off after getting timed out. The act raised several controversies as fans & cricket pundits began the debate whether the act by Shakib & Co. was legitimate & within the game of spirits. Even Mathews released video proofs that proved that he returned back to the crease within the stipulated 2 minutes & he was wrongly timed out.
Other than timed-out drama, Shakib also grabbed the limelight when he flew back home to work on his game under the assistance of his personal coach.
Anamul Haque will replace Shakib-Al-Hasan in 15 Member Squad
Later it was confirmed that wicket-keeper batter Anamul Haque would replace Shakib-Al-Hasan in the 15-man squad for the final fixture. Anamul has played 45 ODIs so far for Bangladesh with his most recent appearance coming in an Asia Cup game against India almost a couple of months ago.
Talking about Bangladesh’s campaign, they have already been eliminated from the ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal race. But still, they will aim to win their remaining fixture of the ODI World Cup 2023 with qualification to the Champions Trophy 2025 at stake.
