Tamil Nadu Batter, Shahrukh Khan is all set to play for a new franchise in the upcoming Indian Premier League edition. Last year’s runners-up and the winners of the 2022 edition, Gujarat Titans bought him for a hefty sum of INR 7.40 crore at the IPL 2024 auction.
Shahrukh Khan Cricketer IPL career
After playing a scintillating knock in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021, Shahrukh Khan grabbed everyone’s eyeballs and his name was floating up on social media ahead of the 2021 IPL auction.
Punjab Kings eventually bought him at the auction for 5.25 crore. Shahrukh Khan made his IPL debut on 12th April 2021 against Rajasthan Royals.
He played 11 matches that season for the franchise and scored 153 runs at an average of 21.85 and striking at 134.21. He donned the role of the finisher.
The IPL 2022 mega-auction saw Shahrukh Khan, once again, in the auction pool and, once again, it was Punjab Kings who made the highest bid for him. He was bought for a whopping sum of INR 9 crore. His performance dipped that season, amassing 117 runs in 8 matches at 16.71 and an underwhelming strike rate of 108.33.
The stint with the Punjab Kings
Despite that, Punjab Kings kept faith in him donning the role of the finisher in the side. He played 14 matches in the 2023 IPL season and amassed 156 runs at an average of 22.29, striking at 165.96.
Despite those numbers, Punjab Kings took the risk of releasing him ahead of the 2024 IPL auction in a bid to get 9 crores in their purse. They bid for him, once again, at the auction but once the bid went past 7 crores, Punjab backed out. Gujarat Titans ended up buying his services for INR 7.40 crore. It will be interesting to see how he will perform for a new franchise in Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL season.
Overall, in his IPL career, Shahrukh Khan has played 33 matches, scoring 426 runs at an average and strike rate of 20.29 and 134.81, respectively.
Shahrukh Khan Career Stats
Despite scoring a bulk of runs in the Cooch-Behar Trophy 2013, Shahrukh Khan didn’t get selected for India’s squad for the 2013 Under-19 World Cup. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him as, a month later, he was picked by his state team Tamil Nadu for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
On 27th February 2014, he went to make his List A debut in the 2013-14 Vijay Hazare Trophy and shared a dressing room with players like Murali Vijay, Laxmipathy Balaji, S Badrinath to name a few.
His first-class debut for Tamil Nadu came in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy on 6th December 2018. Shahrukh Khan hasn’t made his debut for the Indian Cricket Team yet. A fruitful season with Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL season could well pave his way to that road as well.
