Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid: Preview
Sevilla form analysis
Sevilla’s dramatic loss of form deepened further across a harrowing period, losing three of five games to leave manager Quique Sánchez Flores with a huge challenge on his hands. This stretch started with a poor 2-0 home loss against Athletic Bilbao – unable to respond after falling behind to Vesga’s first half strike. A seven goal thriller away at Alaves somehow ended in a 3-2 defeat before a humiliating 5-1 home hammering by Girona marked a new low.
The manner of both losses, devoid of structure or fight pointed at deep lying issues. A creditable 1-1 draw at home with midtable Osasuna brought brief respite before normal service resumed last time out. Despite taking the lead twice through En-Nesyri at Rayo Vallecano, more defensive issues cost them in a 2-1 loss. With dressing room unrest clear and players looking drained of confidence, Flores faces a mammoth challenge to revive this ailing giant.
Atletico Madrid form analysis
Atletico Madrid have found improved form in recent weeks, losing just one of their last five games across all competitions. This stretch began in a deeply disappointing fashion, surrendering a lead three times in a thrilling 4-3 defeat away at Girona. But from that low point, manager Diego Simeone has triggered an uptick culminating in a dramatic late 1-1 derby draw at Real Madrid last time out.
What followed the Girona loss was three consecutive clean sheet victories, each by a one goal margin. Striker Alvaro Morata struck the winner away at Granada before Atletico grinded out narrow 2-0 home victories over Valencia and Rayo Vallecano. So while Simeone has retained his famously rigid defensive structure, the lack of attacking spark has been an issue. Atletico desperately need goals from elsewhere to support Morata. Overall though, typical Simeone traits of discipline, organisation and marginal gains mean momentum could carry Atletico to the top.
Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid: Prediction
The hosts who are winless at home in league matches since September are unlikely to disturb the visitors who are in the midst of a four league game unbeaten run.
Atletico Madrid’s last five league matches have registered an average of 3 league matches. Meanwhile, their opponents have goal tally well beyond that in a similar timeframe. I expect a goalfest when these teams lock horns.
