SC Freiburg vs Stuttgart: Preview
SC Freiburg form analysis
Freiburg’s recent form has highlighted an impressive attack built around goalscorer Lucas Höler but lingering defensive issues consistently undermining positive results. On December 17th, Höler scored one and assisted another during an emphatic 2-0 home win over FC Köln. However, problems at the back surfaced just days later as Freiburg conceded twice in the final minutes during a shock 3-2 loss away to Heidenheim, requiring two Höler goals just to earn a chance late.
Defensive disorganization was evident again on January 27th during a wild 3-2 home win over Hoffenheim, as despite goals from Höler, Vincenzo Grifo and Roland Sallai, defensive mistakes made it a nervy affair. Most recently, defensive issues arose in a 3-1 loss away to Werder Bremen as Grifo’s converted penalty was rendered meaningless. So while boasting enviable attacking talent, Freiburg have struggled badly defensively. Cutting out errors and building cohesion will be vital if manager Christian Streich hopes to return to Europe.
Stuttgart form analysis
Stuttgart’s recent form has highlighted an impressive attack led by Belgian striker Divock Undav but lingering defensive issues consistently undermining positive results. On December 18th, Stuttgart were soundly beaten 3-0 away to giants Bayern Munich. However Undav and the attack shone days later during an emphatic 3-0 home thrashing of Augsburg. But defensive problems surfaced again on January 14th with a 3-1 away loss to Borussia Monchengladbach, requiring Josha Vagnoman just to salvage a goal despite conceding three.
Stuttgart suffered another narrow 1-0 loss away to relegation rivals Bochum next, highlighting issues at both ends before exploding offensively against RB Leipzig on January 27th. Undav bagged a hat trick while left winger Erik Millot scored a penalty during a wild 5-2 home win. So while clearly boasting goalscorers like Undav, Serhou Guirassy and Chris Führich, lingering defensive weaknesses have consistently undermined Stuttgart under manager Sebastian Hoeneß. Cutting out errors must be priority number one.
