SC Freiburg vs Augsburg: Preview
SC Freiburg form analysis
Freiburg made a winning start, beating Hoffenheim 2-1 away thanks to goals from Sallai and an own goal. They backed that up with a hard fought 1-0 home win over Werder Bremen courtesy of a last minute Philipp strike.
However, Freiburg were then hammered 0-5 away at Stuttgart in a shock result. They did respond well initially by taking a 2-1 lead over Dortmund at home, but capitulated late on to lose 2-4 after going down to 10 men. Most recently, Freiburg ground out a 0-0 away draw at Frankfurt.
Overall, Freiburg have shown both their quality and fragility so far this term. Scoring goals has not been a problem with 7 in 4 games. But tighter organization at the back is needed, especially late in matches. Building greater resilience will be key for Freiburg to get their season back on track after two heavy losses.
Augsburg form analysis
Augsburg began with a thrilling 4-4 home draw against Gladbach, twice coming from behind as both defenses struggled. However, defensive issues persisted in a 1-3 home loss to Bayern, with only new signing Beljo on target.
A 2-2 home draw with Bochum followed as Augsburg again conceded cheaply to let a lead slip twice. Augsburg’s defensive problems continued in a 0-3 home thrashing by RB Leipzig. Most recently though, they returned to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory over Mainz thanks to Demirovic’s brace.
Overall, it’s been an open and entertaining start under new manager Enrico Maaßen, but wildly inconsistent. Augsburg have showcased attacking potential, scoring 8 goals already with Demirovic impressing upfront. However, they’ve been far too open defensively, conceding 12 goals.
If Maaßen can make Augsburg tougher to beat, their exciting attack gives them a strong chance of avoiding a relegation battle. But vastly improving defensively and cutting out individual errors is essential now after leaking so many goals in the opening weeks.
