Mumbai batter, Sayali Satghare became the first concussion substitute in the Women’s Premier League on Sunday. She was brought in as the replacement for D Hemlatha during the Gujarat Giants’ clash against Delhi Capitals.
D Hemlatha suffered a blow to her forehead while attempting a catch at deep midwicket in the 15th over of the Delhi Capitals’ innings. Jess Jonassen heaved one across off Kathryn Bryce in the deep wicket region. D Hemlatha, who was stationed there, tried to take the catch but the ball burst through her hands to hit her forehead.
Sayali Satghare Replaced Injured Hemlatha During the Game
The physio immediately came onto the field to attend her and D Hemlatha was soon taken out of the field for medical attention. She didn’t take part in the rest of the match. Satghare, who came in as her replacement, was approved as the concussion substitute.
For the unversed, Satghare plies her trade as a seam bowling all-rounder for the Mumbai team in the domestic competition. She recently made headlines after scoring a century against Arunachal Pradesh in the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy last month. Besides, she picked up 10 wickets with the ball as well.
Gujarat Giants haven’t had a great outing in the ongoing edition of the Women’s Premier League. With four losses in four games, the Giants are languishing right at the bottom of the points table.
They began their campaign with a 5-wicket defeat over Mumbai Indians, followed by an 8-wicket defeat against RCB and a 6-wicket loss against UP Warriorz.
In the clash against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, Gujarat Giants fell 25 runs short of a 163-run target. Riding on a 55-run knock from Meg Lanning, the Giants notched a formidable score of 163 runs in the first innings.
Meghna Singh was the standout bowler for Gujarat as she picked four wickets for 37 runs in four overs. In reply, Gujarat Giants could only manage to score 137 runs in their 20 overs. The top three comprising Beth Mooney (12), Laura Wolvaardt (0), and Phoebe Litchfield (15) failed to hit the straps as the Giants had lost three for just 34 runs on the board inside the first six.
Delhi continued to chip in with wickets, not letting Gujarat build any momentum whatsoever. Ashleigh Gardner lightened up some hopes but her 40-run knock wasn’t going to be enough.
Jess Jonassen starred with the ball for Delhi, picking three wickets for 22 runs in four overs.
