Sassuolo vs Lazio: Preview
Sassuolo form analysis
Neroverdi’s recent matches demonstrate a talented attack capable of scoring goals against any opponent, but defensive issues remain apparent. They started this run with a thrilling 4-2 loss away at Frosinone, despite Pinamonti’s brace. Sassuolo then produced a major upset by beating Juventus 4-2 at home, with goals from Berardi, Pinamonti and an own goal capping a superb performance. However, defensive problems resurfaced as they lost 1-2 at home to Inter, wasting the lead given by Bajrami’s equalizer. Sassuolo’s inconsistency continued with a 0-1 home loss to Monza, before a 1-1 away draw at Lecce, as Berardi’s penalty was cancelled out.
Overall, Sassuolo have shown they can trouble any team going forward with the likes of Pinamonti, Berardi and Lauriente impressing. But they remain far too porous defensively, conceding 2+ goals in every game during this spell. If coach Alessio Dionisi can improve defensive organization and concentration, this exciting young Sassuolo side could challenge for Europe. The attacking talent is evident but without more solidity, results will continue to suffer.
Lazio form analysis
Lazio’s recent Serie A results have been inconsistent under new manager Maurizio Sarri. They started with a disappointing 1-3 home loss to rivals Juventus, only scoring a late consolation through Luis Alberto. A 1-1 home draw with Monza followed as Immobile’s early penalty was cancelled out by Gagliardini. Lazio returned to winning ways by beating Torino 2-0 courtesy of goals from Vecino and Zaccagni. However, another poor home performance resulted in a 0-2 defeat to AC Milan. Most recently, Lazio earned a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Atalanta thanks to goals from Castellanos and Vecino after initially leading through a De Ketelaere own goal.
Overall, Lazio have struggled for sustained momentum over this period as Sarri integrates his ideas. There have been excellent performances like against Torino, but also dismal ones in losses to Juventus and AC Milan. Lazio have appeared vulnerable defensively, keeping just one clean sheet. However, the win over Atalanta demonstrated their attacking threat. Lazio still have enough quality to challenge for Europe but consistency in performances remains elusive so far.
