Salernitana vs Cagliari: Preview
Salernitana form analysis
Granata have struggled badly for form and positive results in their recent Serie A matches. They started this period with an emphatic 0-3 home defeat to Torino, unable to cope with Radonjic’s threat. A 1-1 home draw with Frosinone followed as Jovane Cabral earned them a point. However, Salernitana suffered another home loss next, going down 0-1 to Empoli courtesy of Baldanzi’s strike. Things deteriorated further as they were thrashed 0-4 at home by Inter, with Martinez bagging a hat-trick. Most recently, Salernitana lost heavily again, going down 0-3 away at Monza.
Overall, it’s been a difficult spell for Salernitana as they have conceded 13 goals in their last 5 games, keeping no clean sheets. New coach Davide Nicola has been unable to shore up their porous defense or establish any stability. With just 1 point gained from a possible 15, Salernitana are firmly embroiled in a relegation battle. If Nicola cannot tighten them up defensively and build confidence quickly, Salernitana face a long, difficult season ahead. There is a serious lack of unity and organization that needs urgently addressing.
Cagliari form analysis
Cagliari are in real trouble and facing a difficult battle against relegation this season. They started reasonably well by holding Udinese 0-0 at home. But a 0-2 home loss to Atalanta followed as Cagliari struggled to create chances. They produced a spirited display in a 1-3 home defeat to AC Milan, leading through Luvumbo before capitulating. A heavy 0-3 loss at Fiorentina came next, outclassed by the hosts’ attack. Most recently, Cagliari were thrashed 1-4 at home by high-flying Roma, with Nandez’s late penalty a mere consolation.
Overall, it’s been a bleak period for Cagliari as they have scored just twice and conceded 12 goals in their last 5 matches. New coach Filippo Liverani has been unable to shore up their defence or establish any momentum. Lack of confidence is apparent across the squad. With their poor early form, Cagliari already face an uphill battle to avoid relegation. Liverani needs to urgently address their defensive issues and fragile morale, otherwise Serie B beckons. There is a serious lack of belief that needs restoring.
