The World Boxing Council took a big decision on Thursday and expelled Ryan Garcia after he repeatedly used racial slurs against black people and derogatory comments about Muslims during a livestream on social media. In April, Boxing sensation Garcia was seen reacting to knocking down Devin Haney during their clash at the Barclays Center. Since then, he has faced severe criticism. The New York State Athletic Commission declared Garcia’s win over Haney a no-contest and handed him a one-year suspension after he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
WBC President expressed concern for Garcia’s mental health
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced the expulsion on twitter/X. Sulaiman stated that he is expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with their organization. He further stated that their organization rejects any kind of discrimination. He also expressed concern for Ryan’s well-being, as he has rejected their numerous attempts to help him with his mental health and substance abuse issues.
Garcia issued an apology statement
Garcia issued a brief apology on X, stating that he was just trolling and wants all the killing to stop. The 25-year-old also said, “I love everyone, sorry if I offended you.” There had been growing concerns about Garcia’s behavior prior to the fight with Haney, as he displayed erratic behavior both in person and online, where he shared conspiracy theories and pleaded for help. After the fight, he dismissed claims of mental health problems, saying, “Come on, Guys, did you really think I was crazy?”
Last month, Garcia was arrested for reportedly causing $15,000 in damage to a Beverly Hills hotel. His attorney described the incident as occurring during an extraordinarily challenging time for Ryan, which included devastating news about his mother’s health.
The Boxer’s family issued a statement
Garcia’s family released a statement on Thursday and stated that they categorically do not support any of the statements made by Garcia about race or religion. The family said that these statements do not reflect Ryan’s true personality or the way he was raised. The statement also said that Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the past several years and the family is committed to ensuring that he gets help to get through the challenging time.
