Roma vs Udinese: Preview
Roma form analysis
AS Roma entered the new campaign aiming to build on recent progress under coach José Mourinho. They made a blistering impact with a 4-1 thrashing of Cagliari showcasing their potent attack, thriving on space afforded to them. Roma followed this up with a gritty if narrow 1-0 win over Monza, displaying defensive organisation and resilience to grind out results. However, a lack of midfield control saw them edged out 1-0 away at title rivals Inter, struggling against stubborn low blocks.
A positive response followed as Roma came from behind to beat Lecce 2-1 late on, with Azmoun and Lukaku delivering off the bench. A local derby goalless draw with Lazio then highlighted an inability so far to dictate tight contests. Overall, Roma have shown they carry multiple threats in attack to open up teams. But dominating possession and breaking down compact sides is required if Mourinho’s pragmatism is to unlock elite defences. Achieving better balance through a developing midfield will be vital if Roma’s strong start is to become title contention.
Udinese form analysis
Udinese had to battle to a goalless draw at home against Empoli built on a well organised defensive shape. This foundation served them well again as they drew 1-1 at home to Lecce, with Thauvin netting a penalty. Their defensive strength and threat on the counter was evident again as they frustrated high flying Monza away from home, Lucca capitalising on space behind the defence. This pattern continued with an impressive 1-0 win away at AC Milan, relying on deep defending and opportunism in the final third.
Udinese seemed set for another key win leading 1-0 against Atalanta, before conceding late on in a 1-1 draw. Overall, Udinese have developed into an awkward, stubborn side to break down under Montero’s pragmatic approach. Better productivity is required from Lucca upfront along with less passive displays in midfield. But if Udinese can add greater counter attacking quality, their solidity could form the platform for a successful season.
