Roma vs Monza: Preview
Roma form analysis
AS Roma started this period in stunning fashion, destroying Empoli 7-0 at home with Dybala grabbing a brace. However, they were unable to build momentum, as a 1-1 away draw with Torino followed after losing their lead late on. Roma then suffered a disappointing 1-4 away defeat to Genoa, despite Cristante equalizing early on. They returned to form by grinding out a 2-0 home win over Frosinone thanks to goals from Lukaku and Pellegrini. Most recently, Roma earned an emphatic 1-4 away victory at Cagliari with Lukaku again impressing by scoring twice.
Overall, Roma have shown they have goals in them, with Dybala and Lukaku impressing up front. But there have been some concerning defensive lapses, as highlighted in the thrashing by Genoa. Manager Jose Mourinho seems to have added more attacking threat to the side, but needs to reestablish defensive solidity.
If Mourinho can find the right balance, Roma look well equipped to challenge for a Champions League place. But they need to improve their consistency and translate performances into wins week-in, week-out if they are to break into the top four this season.
Monza form analysis
Monza seem to be finding their feet in the top flight after gaining promotion last season. They started fairly well by coming from behind to draw 1-1 at home with Lecce thanks to Colpani’s equalizer. A creditable 1-1 away draw at Lazio followed as Gagliardini cancelled out Immobile’s early penalty. Monza maintained their unbeaten run with a determined goalless draw at home to Bologna. Their first win came at Sassuolo, grinding out a 1-0 victory thanks to Colombo’s strike. Most recently, Monza earned an impressive 3-0 home win over Salernitana with goals from Colpani, Vignato and Pessina.
Overall, Monza look organized and tough to beat under Raffaele Palladino, having only conceded twice in this spell. They seem capable of grinding out results through strong defensive work. In attack, Colombo and Vignato have shown promise and should only improve. If Palladino can add a little more attacking flair without compromising their solidity, Monza could avoid a relegation battle in their debut top flight season. The early signs are encouraging.
