Earlier, there were reports that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might not participate in the 2024 T20 WC this year. However, in January, the duo showed eagerness to participate in the perennial tournament. Rohit Sharma didn’t play a single T20I match for India after the 2022 World Cup semi-final game against England until January.
He made his comeback in the T20 series against Afghanistan. The Indian captain got out on ducks in the first two matches but it was followed with a sparkling knock of 121 runs in 69 deliveries in the third T20I.
Virat Kohli, though, wasn’t part of the squad and is yet to make his T20I comeback. Notably, the T20 series against Afghanistan was India’s last T20I series before the T20 World Cup.
Jay Shah Confirms Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I Skipper for 2024 T20 WC
The selection for the World Cup will largely be based on the performances of the players in the Indian Premier League 2024. While the BCCI secretary has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the team, he didn’t say anything about Virat Kohli’s role.
Having said that, the management wouldn’t risk leaving out a big-match player like Virat Kohli unless he doesn’t want to play the shortest format any longer. During the unveiling of the Niranjan Shah Stadium on February 14, Jay Shah also claimed that India will win the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Jay Shah said.
Rohit Sharma and Co. had a successful outing in the 2024 T20 World Cup. India didn’t lose a single game in the group stage and then beat New Zealand in the semi-final to set up a riveting clash against the Aussies in the final.
Unfortunately, the Men in Blue lost the summit clash and, with that, their dream of winning another World Cup passed on to next year. It will be interesting to see what the squad be like but for now, Jay Shah has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be at the helm of affairs.
