Rohit Sharma Opens Up About Losing The World Cup Final 2023
Speaking through the team’s official Instagram account, Rohit expressed his difficulty accepting that his team did not win what he considered to be the ultimate cricket reward. “I was clueless on how to recover from this. I was at a loss for what to do for the first few days. My friends and family were my sources of support. I kept everything around me quite light, which was very beneficial. Though it is difficult to process, life goes on. It was difficult, to be honest,” the Indian skipper remarked.
India defeated Australia in the final, which was held on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, after winning ten straight games, the bulk of them quite handily. Although India played an impressive brand of cricket over the competition, Pat Cummins and company prevailed on the day that meant the most.
Rohit continued, “I believed that we had done everything within our power. Should someone inquire as to what went wrong? We emerged victorious in ten games. Indeed, we committed mistakes in those ten games, but that occurs in every game you play. It is not possible to have a flawless game, but it is possible to have a close-to-flawless game. On the plus side, I am also proud of the squad because of the way we performed on the field. You know, you don’t get to play like that every World Cup. And I’m fairly certain that watching the team play, at least the way we played up until the finals, would have made people very happy and proud.”

The Indian skipper set the tone for the team’s aggression, choosing to go all out in the first powerplay throughout the majority of the competition when he opened the batting. His batting created the groundwork for players like Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill to lead India to match-winning totals.
After the World Cup, Rohit stated that he needed time to clear his thoughts. However, it has been encouraging to watch the supporters’ reactions to the loss, as they are proud of his team’s winning streak.
The 36-year-old remarked, “It was so difficult to bounce back and start moving on after that final. Because of this, I’ve concluded that I need to travel somewhere and simply clear my head. But then I noticed that people were approaching me wherever I was and complimenting everyone on our performance and effort. I feel bad for them all because they shared our ambition of winning the World Cup.”
“Everyone you know, both those who watched it from home and those who came to the stadium first, showed us so much support wherever we went during this World Cup campaign. I want to express my gratitude for all that has been done for us over the past 1.5 months. However, the more I consider that, the more dissatisfied I am that we were unable to complete the task,” he continued.

According to Rohit, it was disheartening to be this close to winning the championship, who has talked about how the 2011 World Cup was a major turning point in his career after not being selected for it.
Rohit stated, “I watched the 50-over World Cup growing up. And we’ve worked for that for all these years because, to me, that was the ultimate reward. Isn’t that disheartening? If you don’t make it through it and you don’t receive what you want—what you’ve been searching for your entire life—what you were dreaming of, you can become irritated and disillusioned at times.”
To some extent, though, the Mumbaikar admitted, it made him feel good when people approached him and expressed how pleased they were with the team. He said, “And I was healing right along with them.”
