Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been suspended for seven domestic matches by the Football Association (FA) following a controversial remark about his teammate Son Heung-min.
Rodrigo Bentancur Handed Seven-Match Ban for Comments About Son Heung-min
The decision comes after an investigation into a media interview aired earlier this year, which included a comment deemed racially insensitive.
In the interview with Canal 10, recorded in June, Bentancur was asked by the host to showcase a Spurs teammate’s jersey. The Uruguayan international responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
The remark quickly drew criticism, leading Bentancur to issue an apology. Despite his contrition, the FA charged the midfielder with an aggravated breach of Rule E3, citing the comment’s reference to nationality, race, or ethnic origin. After a review by an independent regulatory commission, the charge was upheld.
As a result, Bentancur will miss Tottenham’s next seven domestic fixtures, including six Premier League games and a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester United.
However, he remains eligible to play in Europa League fixtures, allowing him to feature in matches against Roma and Rangers.
An FA spokesperson stated:
“An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder denied the charge, but the panel found it to be proven following a hearing.”
The FA emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting the importance of combating racism and discrimination in football.
For Tottenham, the ban represents a significant blow to their squad depth. Bentancur, a pivotal player since his arrival from Juventus, will be unavailable during a critical stretch of the season.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility players have as public figures and the impact of their words.
Both Bentancur and Tottenham have pledged to move forward, with the midfielder likely reflecting deeply on the importance of fostering respect and inclusivity in the sport.
