Cricket Legend Ricky Ponting Takes Helm of Washington Freedom in US League
Cricket star Ricky Ponting, former captain of the Australian national team, has been named head coach of the Washington Freedom franchise in Major League Cricket (MLC), the league announced Tuesday.
Ponting, a two-time World Cup champion and widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest batsmen, joins the Freedom on a two-year deal. He replaces fellow Australian Greg Shipperd, who led the team to a third-place finish in the inaugural MLC season last year.
The signing marks a significant coup for MLC, as Ponting brings not only his on-field prowess but also extensive coaching experience, currently leading the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“Cricket is really on the rise in the U.S., and I’m looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket,” Ponting said in a statement. “I’ve been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom, and while it’s a bit surreal to be replacing my mate Greg Shipperd, there’s probably no one better to set up a successful franchise.”
Ponting’s appointment aligns with MLC’s ambition to grow the sport in the American market, currently dominated by baseball, basketball, and American football. Washington owner Sanjay Govil sees Ponting as a key figure in achieving this goal.
“His understanding of our vision – to enhance the sport’s profile in the U.S. and to develop local talent – resonates with our mission,” Govil said. “Ricky’s appointment is a pivotal step in our quest to not just participate in the MLC but to redefine it, offering unparalleled cricket experiences to our fans and creating a legacy of excellence in American cricket.”
Ponting’s arrival underscores the growing connection between MLC and the IPL. Four IPL franchises either own teams in MLC or have invested in the league, highlighting the potential for knowledge and talent exchange to accelerate cricket’s growth in the U.S.
With the United States co-hosting the T20 World Cup later this year alongside West Indies, the timing of Ponting’s appointment couldn’t be better. His leadership and experience could prove crucial in propelling MLC and American cricket forward, capitalizing on the increased global spotlight during the World Cup.
