Republic of Ireland vs Netherlands: Preview
Preview & Predictions of the European Championship Qualifying fixture in Group B at the Aviva Stadium.
Republic of Ireland form analysis
Against France at home, Ireland put in a solid defensive performance before eventually succumbing to a 0-1 defeat after Pavard’s second half strike. It was a creditable display though against the world champions.
Ireland then produced an improved attacking performance away in Greece, equalizing Collins’ goal before losing 1-2 after conceding early in each half. The fightback showed promise.
In their most recent qualifier, Ireland claimed their first victory by comfortably dispatching minnows Gibraltar 3-0 at home. Goals from Johnston, Ferguson and Idah secured the win.
Overall, Ireland have shown gradual signs of progress after two narrow defeats. The resilient display against France provided a platform to build on. Getting their first win on the board was critical and they will look to push on from here
Netherlands form analysis
The Netherlands made an excellent start by thrashing defending world champions France 4-0 at home in March 2023. Griezmann and Upamecano scored early before Mbappe’s brace sealed an emphatic win.
They built on this by comfortably dispatching minnows Gibraltar 3-0 a few days later thanks to goals from Depay and a double from Nathan Ake.
After a few months break, the Netherlands continued their perfect start to qualifying with another dominant 3-0 victory at home over Greece in September. De Roon, Gakpo and Weghorst provided the goals this time in a professional performance.
Overall, it’s been an outstanding beginning to the Euro 2024 campaign for the Dutch who have scored 10 goals without reply in their opening 3 games. The wins over France and Greece in particular have sent a real statement as the Netherlands look to make an impact at next summer’s tournament.
