When CM Punk was in AEW, his backstage altercation with Jack Perry led to his firing. The Chicago native refrained from commenting on the footage except once on Ariel Helwani’s show. However, recently, in an interview, CM Punk spoke about AEW and the controversial backstage brawl with Jack Perry.
While speaking on the SI Media podcast, Punk was asked about the incident, to which he responded, “It felt really ugly. But then I was just like, why? Showing that footage would neither help them or hurt me, so I was just like, whatever. Being the top draw for two different companies is pretty wild. Like, thanks, guys.”
CM Punk gave a huge boost to AEW
CM Punk was arguably the AEW’s biggest attraction and many accused Tony Khan’s owned company of showing the footage publicly to boost their declining ratings after his departure. AEW Dynamite is currently struggling to touch the one million mark nowadays. Surprisingly, the “Cookie Monster” compared his current feud with Drew McIntyre to the AEW footage. According to him, it’s similar to him facing the Scottish warrior at SummerSlam 2024 on August 4, Saturday.
Punk also thinks that this situation is similar to fighting in the UFC, where fighters beat the sh** out of each other in the Octagon and argue during the press conference to make things more intense. Although the former WWE champion doesn’t like this process himself, it is the nature of the sport. CM Punk said that the payoff would be to enter the ring and get black eyes and broken teeth after tormenting Drew McIntyre. He further said that he would expect to do what he set his mind to.
The Chicago native has been involved in several controversies
CM Punk has been involved in several controversies throughout his career, whether in WWE or in AEW. During his stint at WWE, CM Punk’s pipebomb promo sparked a huge controversy that led to him being fired on his wedding day in 2014. When he returned to pro-wrestling through AEW, fans had high expectations from him. However, he eventually got involved in a backstage brawl, first with The Elites and then Jack Perry. After his exit from the AEW, Punk returned to WWE after almost ten years, and showed up at Survivor Series 2023 first. Fans are very happy with his return and enjoying his promos quite a lot.
