Brazil and Real Madrid winger Rodrygo Goes has admitted his frustration after missing out on the 2024 Ballon d’Or shortlist, despite a strong season for both club and country.
The 23-year-old, who was instrumental in helping Real Madrid secure both La Liga and Champions League titles last season, expressed disbelief at his exclusion from the prestigious 30-man list.
Brazil’s Rodrygo Admits Shock at Missing Out on Ballon d’Or Shortlist
Rodrygo’s omission comes as a surprise to many fans and pundits, especially considering his key role in Madrid’s success. Last season, the Brazilian forward netted 17 goals and provided a series of crucial assists across 51 appearances.
His contributions in both domestic and European competitions helped Madrid reclaim their domestic crown while conquering Europe once again. However, despite these achievements, he was overlooked in favor of his Madrid teammates Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, and others.
“I was upset,” Rodrygo admitted in an interview with ESPN.
“I think I deserved to be on that list. I don’t want to take anything away from the players who are there, but I believe I had done enough to be in the top 30. It was a shock for me.”
While the likes of Vinícius Júnior and Bellingham have been celebrated for their stellar performances, Rodrygo’s role has often flown under the radar. His ability to deliver in clutch moments — including scoring decisive goals in crucial matches — has made him an invaluable asset to Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Yet, despite his consistent output, the recognition that often follows eluded him this time.
Rodrygo took to social media following the Ballon d’Or announcement, posting a series of photos celebrating his achievements with a lighthearted caption that included a laughing emoji. When asked about the post, the winger explained it was his way of mocking the snub.
“I made a post to laugh at the situation,” he said.
“But everyone knows how I really feel. Both at Madrid and in the national team, people have supported me and sent messages, so that’s been nice.”
The Brazilian star hasn’t let the disappointment derail his current form. Rodrygo played a pivotal role in Brazil’s recent World Cup qualifying campaign, scoring the only goal in their 1-0 win over Ecuador. His next challenge will be against Paraguay, where he’s expected to start as Brazil look to build momentum.
Despite missing out on personal recognition, Rodrygo remains focused on the bigger picture. He has featured in all of Real Madrid’s matches this season and will undoubtedly continue to play a key role as Los Blancos push for further silverware.
While his Ballon d’Or snub stings, Rodrygo’s determination and talent speak for themselves. His exclusion may have raised eyebrows, but his response on the pitch suggests he’s ready to make an even stronger case next year.
