Real Madrid vs Girona: Preview
Real Madrid form analysis
Los Blancos put together an unbeaten run prior to a disappointing last gasp 1-1 home draw against rivals Atletico Madrid last time out. It began with four consecutive victories, starting with a hard fought 1-0 home win over Mallorca courtesy of defender Antonio Rudiger’s late strike. What followed was an entertaining 3-2 come from behind victory at home over strugglers Almeria. Twice falling behind, Bellingham’s penalty and then Vinicius Junior strike forced extra time before right back Carvajal snatched a dramatic winner.
Sandwiched between was a battling 2-1 away victory at Las Palmas as Vinicius and then Tchouameni strikes saw Madrid advance. So while not always convincing, manager Carlo Ancelotti found ways to win tight games even when underwhelming. Remaining ruthlessly clinical has been vital while a solid defence has provided a platform. Overall if Madrid can regain control of the midfield battle and retain leads better, they remain on course to win the La Liga title.
Girona form analysis
Girona have been very impressive in recent matches, remaining unbeaten in five league matches since last month. This strong run began with a sensational 4-3 home comeback victory against Atletico Madrid, scoring late through Ivan Martin after a thrilling seven goal shootout. What followed was a hard earned point away at basement side Almeria and then the thrashing of Sevilla 5-1 at home thanks chiefly to a Dovbyk first half hat trick.
Though Portu struck the winner in a huge 1-0 victory at Celta Vigo next up, manager Míchel Sánchezwill look back on the Sevilla performance as a major high point. Played out from the back at pace, Girona ripped a poor defence apart on the counter. Staying hard to beat but retaining attacking flair has since seen momentum build. Overall, if able to sustain this giant killing form, Girona have enough about them to complete a great escape.
Real Madrid vs Girona: Prediction
The last six La Liga games in the Santiago Bernabeu have witnessed an average 3.5 goals. Meanwhile, Girona’s last six league matches on the road have had three goals per game on average. I expect this high scoring trend to follow.
