Real Madrid is reportedly preparing a £43 million bid to lure Tottenham Hotspur’s star defender, Cristian Romero, to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Argentine center-back has emerged as a prime target for the Spanish giants as they look to bolster their defense ahead of the new season.
Real Madrid First Bid £43m for Spurs Defender Cristian Romero
Despite a relatively quiet summer transfer window following the high-profile signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, Los Blancos seem intent on making one final push to strengthen their squad.
After waving goodbye to seasoned stalwarts like Nacho and Toni Kroos, and with Carlo Ancelotti relying on Jesus Vallejo’s return from loan to fill defensive gaps, Madrid’s hierarchy believes Romero could be the perfect addition to their backline.
Romero, who has established himself as a vital part of Tottenham’s defense since his arrival in 2021, has continued to impress both at club and international levels.
Last season, he featured prominently for Spurs, making 96 appearances in all competitions, and played a key role in Argentina’s Copa America triumph, where they conceded only one goal in five matches with Romero on the pitch.

However, Spurs are unlikely to let Romero go without a fight. The 26-year-old has three years left on his contract, and Tottenham’s management reportedly values him significantly higher than the £43 million that Real Madrid is prepared to offer.
Given that Spurs invested £42 million to secure Romero’s services just three years ago, it’s expected that they will demand a considerably higher fee if they are to part ways with the defender.
Adding to the complexity, Romero has expressed a desire to remain in North London for at least another season, despite the swirling rumors about his future. His commitment to Spurs is likely to make negotiations challenging for Madrid, who must not only convince Tottenham but also persuade Romero himself to make the switch to Spain.
Real Madrid’s need for a younger defensive option is clear, with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba both entering their 30s. Still, whether Florentino Perez is willing to significantly increase his offer remains to be seen. Spurs would also face the task of finding an immediate replacement, should they decide to cash in on their prized defender.
As the transfer window edges closer to its conclusion, all eyes will be on whether Real Madrid’s pursuit of Cristian Romero will come to fruition, or if Spurs will successfully fend off the European champions’ advances.
