Indian Cricket Team Skipper Rohit Shama
Never easy to lose a test and series. Can’t really digest it. Didn’t play our best cricket, NZ played better throughout. We’ve made a lot of mistakes and can’t forgive that. We didn’t put enough runs in the first innings, first two tests. This time we felt we were a bit ahead of the game. The target was changeable; we failed to apply ourselves. When you’re chasing a target, you want runs. It was in my mind, just didn’t come off.
It doesn’t look that great when it happens. I go in to bat with certain ideas, disappointed it hasn’t worked out this series. We’re facing the results of our mistakes. Pant, Gill etc showed how to bat here, be slightly ahead and proactive. On these pitches, we are aware of what to do. This was an unfortunate series and it hasn’t come off for us. As a captain I wasn’t at my best, or with the bat either. Some positives: bowlers kept us in the game.
Player of the Match Ajaz Patel
“Not yet, might have to take some of this pitch back home. Spin bowling is about rhythm, and making the most of it. Have to take conditions by the horn sometimes and help the team.
To be fair, I felt confident in the morning session yesterday, but the wicket didn’t help. Was able to use my guile and shape in the air after with the help the wicket offered. Pant has batted phenomenally, so I had to bowl unconventionally. He can hit my good balls all day.
Player of the Series Will Young
“It’s massive for me. For the team, coming here and going again and again, proud of the efforts taken to contribute to that. I like to keep my batting simple, score where I can and trust my defence. If I know where I want to score, it keeps the mind clearer.
Memories created with the boys, in the dressing and hotel room, we enjoy each others’ company and it’s a great feeling to do it for the other bloke. Don’t know about Kane, we’ll see next series.
New Zealand Skipper Tom Latham
“Very ecstatic! To be in this position, what the boys have done in the three tests, we’ve backed it up on a different surface here. Pretty happy! Being able to adapt to each ground, there isn’t one way of doing things. Different guys have stood up at different times. That’s the beauty of team sport. Last week it was Mitch, now it was Ajaz. All-round great team effort, so proud of the guys.
We wanted to keep it simple, I think we’ve done that, being aggressive with the bat and being proactive. Tried to do our best here. Not a lot changed from SL, we didn’t play that bad here. Fell on the right side of the toss here which helps. We believed last night, and bowled really well this morning putting ourselves in a good position.”
