Ashwin was an opening batter in juvenile cricket but eventually switched to bowling. After making an appearance for Tamil Nadu in 2006, he was named captain of that team the following year.

IPL Career

When Ashwin played two matches and took two wickets for the Chennai Super Kings in the competition in 2009, he made his IPL debut.

When the Chennai Super Kings selected him in 2010, he gained notoriety. He participated in the entire season, amassing 13 wickets and 30 runs.

Due to his outstanding play in the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL 3), he was chosen for the Indian team that traveled to Zimbabwe in May and June of that year.

In 2011, he was a player for CSK, participating in 16 games and taking 20 wickets during the season. He participated in 19 matches in the 2012 Indian Premier League and took 14 wickets at an average of 28.21. In the competition, he only managed eighteen runs. He participated in 18 matches for CSK in the 2013 IPL, taking 15 wickets at an economy of 6.72.

In the 2014 Indian Premier League, he was a member of the Chennai franchise, participating in 16 matches and taking 16 wickets. His final IPL season was in 2015, when he played 14 matches for the Chennai Super Kings, taking 10 wickets with a 2/5 bowling average. His economy had remained at 5.84. 

In 2016, he was a player for Pune, appearing in 14 games and taking 10 wickets. He did not play in the 2017 Indian Premier League; however, in the 2018 season, he was a member of Kings 11 Punjab and took 10 wickets. In 2020–21, he was a player for the Delhi Capitals, where he claimed 13 wickets in 15 games.

In the IPL 2021, Ashwin will represent the Delhi Capitals, having been retained by DC before the IPL 2021 auction. For the 2022 Indian Premier League, he was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals, where he took 12 wickets in 17 games.

During the IPL 2023, he participated in 13 games for the same team and claimed 14 wickets.

International Career

Test Career

In 2011, Ashwin was added to the Test team that would play on India’s tour to the West Indies. In Delhi, he made his debut in test cricket and received his cap from Sachin Tendulkar. In the same match, he was awarded Man of the Match as well.

India defeated the opposition by five wickets in the first test of the trip, which was held between November 6 and November 9, 2011. In the match, he struck out six batters in the second inning after striking out three in the first.

In the second match, which took place on November 14–17, 2011, he got rid of two hitters in each of the first and second innings. India prevailed by an inning and fifteen runs.

In the third test of the West Indies tour of India, which took place from November 22–26, 2011, he claimed nine wickets in all. The game ended in a stalemate. He took six wickets in the first innings of the August 23–27 test, which India won by an innings and 115 runs, during the New Zealand tour of India in 2012.

In the second Test match, which took place on August 31 and was won by India by five wickets, he claimed six wickets. He took part in the 2012 England tour of India, during which time Ashwin passed the 50-wicket mark and became the fastest Indian to do it in Test cricket.

During Australia’s 2013 Test tour to India, he had great success. During the tour, he claimed the most wickets of any Indian bowler in a four-match Test series with 29.

In the first test match of the tour, which took place from February 22 to 26, Ashwin claimed 12 wickets in both innings. In the first innings of the game, Virat Kohli scored 107 runs and MS Dhoni scored 224 runs. At Chepauk Stadium, India won the match by eight wickets.

In the second Test, which took place between March 02 and March 06, 2013, he claimed six wickets as India won by an innings and 135 runs.

In the third tour match, which India won by six wickets between March 14 and 18, he removed four batters.

Ashwin was a member of the team that traveled to South Africa in 2013 as part of India’s Test series. Having missed the second test, he ended the series without a wicket. He took just one wicket in the five-match ODI series that India lost 4-0 when on tour in New Zealand in 2014.

In 2014, Ashwin was a member of the Indian team that toured England. He only participated in the last two tests, when India lost both of them. In the fourth test, he was dismissed three times, but in the fifth, he went wicketless. Aswhin did not participate in the first test, although he was a member of the 2014 Australian tour team. For an average of 48.66, he got rid of 12 batters in the final three games.

In the 2015–16 season, Ashwin scored 336 runs and claimed 48 wickets. In 2016, he was awarded both the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year and the ICC Cricketer of the Year.

During India’s 2016 West Indies tour, Ashwin was a member of the team that amassed 235 runs, including two centuries, and 17 wickets in four Test matches. In three Test matches during New Zealand’s 2016 tour of India, Ashwin claimed 27 wickets. During the five-match test series during England’s 2016 tour to India, he took 28 wickets and scored 306 runs.

In 2017, Ashwin was the only addition made to the Indian test team for their tour of the West Indies.

For the third year in a row, he was included in the 2017 Test Team of the Year.

India played the majority of their test matches against South Africa and England away from home in 2018.

In four tests during England’s 2021 tour of India, Ashwin took 32 wickets and amassed 189 runs. During the series, he claimed his 400th wicket in a test.

With four wickets in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship final defeat to New Zealand in 2022, he was the top wicket-taker. He participated in the Australian Test team that toured India in 2023, taking 25 wickets in four games to help the team win the series. However, he did not participate in the 2023 ICC WTC finals, where Australia prevailed. He was a member of the Indian team that toured the West Indies in 2023 and participated in two tests.

In the opening game of the series, which took place from July 12 to July 17, he took five and seven wickets in the first and second innings, respectively. India ended up winning the match by a total of 32 runs in one innings. 

Ashwin amassed three wickets and scored 56 runs in the first innings of the second test match, which was contested on July 20. The game was tied at the end. He was a member of the test team that traveled to South Africa in 2023–2024 with India, where Ashwin only participated in the first test. With just 8 runs scored, he took Gerald Coetzee’s wicket to help South Africa win the match by an innings and 32 runs. He was added to the test team that will travel to India in 2024 with England. 

In the first test match of the series, which took place between January 25 and 28, Ashwin claimed five wickets, although India lost by a margin of 28 runs. In the encounter on February 2, he took three wickets in the second inning after going wicketless in the first. ODI Career

The crowd took notice of him due to his remarkable economy rate and his performance in this limited-over game. 2010 saw Ashwin play his first ODI match against Sri Lanka. He was dropped from the ODI lineup after Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav came into the picture. T20I Career
