England Outclass West Indies in Dominant Super 8s Opener
England produced their most convincing performance of the T20 World Cup so far, thrashing West Indies by eight wickets in the opening match of the Super 8s stage.
West Indies, previously unbeaten in the tournament, were restricted to a modest 180-4 on a good batting surface at the Darren Sammy National Stadium in St. Lucia. England chased down the target with 15 balls to spare, thanks to a fine 87 not out from Phil Salt and an unbeaten 48 from Jonny Bairstow.
England’s bowling attack, often inconsistent throughout the group stage, stifled the powerful West Indian batting line-up. They conceded just 52 runs in the powerplay overs compared to the 92 plundered by the Windies against Afghanistan on the same ground just days earlier.
Openers Brandon King (retired hurt) and Johnson Charles (38) struggled for fluency, while Nicholas Pooran (36) was far more subdued than his recent exploits. Rovman Powell (36) provided a brief spark with some lusty blows, but was eventually caught off Liam Livingstone.
Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Livingstone, and Moeen Ali all picked up a wicket each, with Sam Curran keeping things tight in his three overs for just 25 runs.
In reply, England’s batting looked composed and clinical. Jos Buttler (25) and Salt put on a solid opening stand of 67 before Buttler fell lbw to Roston Chase. Moeen Ali, promoted to target the West Indian spinners, was dismissed cheaply, but the arrival of Bairstow injected momentum into the chase.
Bairstow (48*) struck a six and a four off Alzarri Joseph before dominating Akeal Hosein’s over, scoring 15 of the 16 runs. Salt, who anchored the innings, then unleashed a brutal assault on Romario Shepherd, smashing 30 runs off his over to put the game firmly beyond West Indies’ reach.
This win not only strengthens England’s position in the group but also significantly boosts their net run rate, which could prove crucial in the race for the semi-finals. They face South Africa next, knowing victory will likely seal their progression.
England’s performance against one of the tournament favorites marks a significant turnaround after a mixed group stage. After a washout, a defeat to Australia, and two rain-affected wins, they scraped through on net run rate. This emphatic victory against West Indies suggests they are back to their best and are genuine contenders for the title.
