Following Pakistan’s 2023 ODI World Cup defeat to Afghanistan, supporters, ex-players, and experts have been critical of Babar Azam’s captaincy. Several people have requested that he resign as captain following the defeat. Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja has also chastised cricketer Babar Azam for his captaincy. Ramiz claimed that Pakistan is plagued by numerous issues.
Raja said, “Pakistan is faced with numerous challenges. Babar Azam’s tactical game needs a lot of work. As the innings were coming to an end, Hasan Ali was getting the ball to reverse. At that point, the equation was run-a-ball. Pakistan was in dire need of wickets, and Hasan appeared on the verge of being removed. Why was a spinner to be bowled from the other end?”
Cricketer Babar Azam gets slammed:
Some of Babar’s decisions during the tournament were questioned by the former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Ramiz highlighted a number of issues, including poor bowler rotation, poor tactical decisions, bowler selection, and more. Raja thought Babar could have led the team more effectively during the game. After the 2023 ODI World Cup, Ramiz believed that Pakistan might require a change of direction.
The former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board continued, “There needs to be a serious conversation about changing this team’s DNA after the World Cup. They require a total makeover in terms of perspective, methodology, fresh ideas, and talent. We have to get better in every single area. Pakistan is at its lowest point. In the midst of everything, Babar Azam needs to step up and demonstrate his leadership abilities.”
Ramiz added, “Babar was said to be disappointed by the defeat to Afghanistan. This World Cup was a complete and utter disaster for Pakistan. Afghanistan’s defeat will be extremely painful. When I interviewed Babar Azam, his face was a picture of disappointment. Raja felt that Pakistan had never experienced circumstances similar to what they were facing in the ODI World Cup 2023. Pakistan has never dealt with a surprising defeat like this one before.”
